The College and the District
Skyline College is part of the San Mateo County Community College District and is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), enrolling approximately 16,000 students each academic year. The Position
This is paraprofessional work involved with assisting faculty in the delivery of classroom instruction and/or laboratory teaching. Under direction, the employee performs a variety of preparatory work and planning, and at the direction of faculty prepares materials for use in the classroom and/or laboratory. Public contact is extensive and primarily includes students, faculty and staff, but can also include vendors and staff from other educational institutions and agencies for the purpose of exchanging subject matter and procedural information. A high degree of independent judgment and creativity are required to resolve a wide variety of minor and occasional major problems that may arise. Consequences of errors in judgment can be costly in public relations and employee time; however, supervisory controls are available to limit the risk of serious error. An Instructional Aide II differs from Instructional Aide I by the scope of assignments, including tutoring responsibilities (without close faculty supervision), and level of required subject-matter expertise. An Instructional Aide II can perform a wide variety of classroom and laboratory duties within the scope of the classification. An Instructional Aide II can lead the work of Instructional Aide I staff, clerical staff, and direct student assistants as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. 1. Exchanges information with students, faculty and staff regarding music-related resources, materials, policies and procedures associated with the classroom or laboratory setting
2. Confers with music faculty regarding curriculum, student materials for use in the classroom or laboratory, computer hardware, software, other learning tools, equipment and musical instruments, student assignments and progress, tests and student test scores, proctoring and scoring tests, student attendance and practice room monitoring, purchase or modification, inventory and storage of musical equipment/instruments and sheet music, and other technical information related to the services and programs offered
3. Assists music faculty in practice rooms and music labs (piano lab, computer music lab), maintains student practice records and assists students, when needed, in completing practice hours for performance classes
4. Makes presentations to small and large groups and conducts outreach activities to publicize services, performances, and programs as assigned
5. Under direction of music faculty or as the result of a student learning plan, tutors students on problem areas of a designated subject area, demonstrates subject-matter skills, directs students in practical laboratories, and demonstrates musical techniques
6. Trouble shoots operational problems with music laboratory and classroom equipment
7. Researches background of subject-matter to maintain current information, and as directed by faculty, compiles and organizes lesson plans and materials for faculty presentation
8. Recommends the modification or purchase of music laboratory and classroom equipment
9. Maintains a library of teaching and learning materials, sheet music, recordings, and musical instruments
10. Uses a variety of computer software to organize and maintain learning resources and related data, faculty materials, tests, and related data, prepare routine correspondence, reports, publicity and other materials
11. Proctors and scores tests and assists with performance prep as directed and supervised by faculty
12. Sets up and maintains online and manual files, including music library, music lab schedules and instrument inventory.
13. Enters, modifies and retrieves a variety of statistical and other data for special and regular reports as assigned
14. Trains and directs the work of student assistants, and can lead the work of clerical and other staff as assigned
15. Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
• A combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in music
• Successful work experience of increasing responsibility, preferably in a classroom or performance setting, that has included tutoring students
• Experience with directing the work of others
• Skill in oral communication, including public speaking
• Skill in written communication
• Experience with research, compiling data and narrative for reports
• Skill in multi-tasking, prioritizing workloads, and working independently
• Skill in the use of a variety of computer software to prepare correspondence, publicity materials, and reports from rough draft
• Skill in setting up and maintaining online and manual files
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Working knowledge of music topics taught in the classroom or laboratory
2. Skill in working with diverse adult learning styles
3. Skill in clear and direct oral communication, including public speaking

Physical Requirements
This classification requires manual dexterity; use of a keyboard, mouse and computer for extended periods of time; pulling, pushing, reaching; and moving items of light to moderate weight in order to perform the essential functions.

Conditions of Employment
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:
