A. General Summary of Position:
The Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Boston campus currently invites highly motivated young researchers for a postdoctoral position in experimental quantum information processing utilizing superconducting circuits. The position is expected to last two year with the possibility of renewal.
The successful candidate will be working in the exciting and nascent field of superconducting quantum computing or quantum information. Superconducting quantum information is exploding with research funding and interest from industry giants such as Google, IBM, Microsoft, Intel, and a venture funded startup ecosystem making large investments over the promise to realize a functional quantum computer in the next decade. The opportunities right now for scientists and engineers are vast in this field, since currently there is a shortage of highly skilled quantum engineers.
The successful candidate will work on developing symmetry protected superconducting quantum bits which are protected from decoherence due to noises. The project encompasses experimental realization of such protected qubits through nanofabrication of quantum circuits realized from Aluminum Josephson junction technology. After the quantum circuits are fabricated the candidate will work to utilize and further develop low temperature and low-noise experimental measurement hardware for characterization of qubit coherence and gate level control. The successful candidate will also aid in managing group activities, present work at conferences, and help with manuscript and proposal preparation. This project will allow the candidate to gain valuable experience in Microwave circuit engineering, low temperature measurements in a cryogen-free dilution refrigerator, nano fabrication of superconducting quantum circuits, and high frequency low noise measurements to characterize superconducting quantum circuits to be used to construct a quantum computer. This project has access to some of the best nanofabrication tools in the world at Harvard University for the fabrication of the quantum circuits.
The successful candidate will work in a small research team including one other postdoc and graduate students. We are seeking candidates who have earned a PhD in either Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. We are looking for candidates with experience in at least one of the following areas: low temperature measurements, nano fabrication, high frequency low-noise measurements, or theoretical expertise in related Josephson physics.
