About the Department
The Music Department provides educational and performance opportunities for student and community participants through a variety of musical experiences and academic courses. The department also serves as a cultural resource for the university and the greater community through performances and presentations offered by our students, our student/community groups, and by our faculty. Approximately 1800 students are served annuallythrough academic music classes and for-credit performance ensembles.
Essential Job Duties
The NC State Music Department is seeking an Assistant Band Director to provide assistance with instructing the Power Sound of the South marching band and other athletic bands. This position includes supervision at all home and select away games as assigned, administrative duties in support of the band program, and instruct music courses as assigned by the Department Head. This position reports directly to the Department Head in the NC State Department of Music.
Essential Functions:
- Serve as an instructor in areas of marching fundamentals and music performance for the Power Sound of the South marching band.
- Attend all home football games
- Attend away football games and select pep band performances throughout the year as needed by the Director of Bands
- Assist with conducting and supervising the bands at special performances (Bowl games, parades, etc.) throughout the year.
- Assist with organizing, promoting, and hosting NC State Band Day for high school students
- Perform administrative duties for the band program as assigned by the Director of Bands
- Support the Director of Band’s vision for the program with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion
- Additional responsibilities include oversight of the band program including recruitment, working collaboratively with faculty and staff, promoting an environment of collegiality, and providing service to the campus, community, and profession
- An additional teaching assignment of one course per semester will be based on the needs of the department and the candidate’s background and areas of expertise
Other Responsibilities
Additional responsibilities for this position include serving on department committees as assigned. Developing, organizing and administering summer music programs and camps.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Master’s Degree in Music.
Other Required Qualifications
- Experience directing marching band and pep band at the university level.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctoral degree (PhD, DMA) in music.
- Experience working with developing brass players
- Ability to teach courses in written and/or aural theory
