About the Department
The Counseling Center assists NC State students experiencing personal, academic or vocational problems. The goal of the Counseling Center is to provide students with professional counseling services and outreach to help them cope with issues that may impede successful academic performance. The Counseling Center also offers crisis intervention and psychological/psychiatric assessment, as well as consultation with others who have concerns about the mental/emotional state of NC State students. Our services are primarily short-term in nature and we make referrals to other helping professionals and community agencies as appropriate.

Essential Job Duties
The Counseling Center assists NC State students experiencing personal, academic or vocational problems. The goal of the Counseling Center is to provide students with professional counseling services and outreach to help them cope with issues that may impede successful academic performance. The Counseling Center also offers crisis intervention and psychological/psychiatric assessment as well as consultation with others who have concerns about the mental/emotional state of NC State students. Our services are primarily short-term in nature and we make referrals to other helping professionals and community agencies as appropriate.
Provide professional individual and group counseling services and outreach to NC State students as well as consultation to University administrators, staff and others who have concerns about the mental/emotional status of NC State students. This position will have an emphasis on providing leadership and oversight of Masters Level Internship program. This cohort of trainees includes graduate students working on Masters Degrees in Social Work, Counseling and Advanced Practicum Students in Psychology programs.
Generalist Counselor:
a) Individual and group counseling of NC State students/clients (personal, academic, and vocational assessment and counseling); psychological assessment; developmental and crisis counseling; couples counseling; evaluation of students for withdrawal from the University
b) Development and participation in Outreach programming
c) Consultation with faculty staff, parents, and others
d) Providing evaluations and recommendations regarding students with academic and conduct problems
e) Some participation in after hours “on call” and possible evening office hours
f) General administrative responsibilities
g) Coordination of the center’s Master’s Level Internship program
Training Responsibilities:
• Develop, organize and maintain a comprehensive clinical training program designed to meet the needs of Masters Interns as well as the overall clinical needs of NC State Counseling Center.
• Develop, implement and evaluate activities in a manner that is consistent with the academic needs of graduate students in training.
• Develop understanding of the training and licensure requirements for all three disciplines.
• Keep current with policies, practices, legal and ethical standards in regard to the provision of clinical training.
• Conduct evaluative reviews of the training curricula and implement appropriate changes and enhancements that enhance the service needs of NC State Counseling Center.
• Coordinate annual Intern selection process.
• Organize and monitor the administrative aspects of supervision to interns and communicate relevant issues to the Training Director, as needed.
• Communicate with Training Director regarding trainee progress and development.
• Collaborate with the Training Director and other staff to insure the provision of high quality clinical supervision and evaluation of trainees.
• Collaborate with Training Director in order to integrate the Master’s Level Internship into the overall Training program which includes trainees from different disciplines at both the Post-Master’s and Doctoral levels.
• Coordinate remediation and due process procedures for interns and provide reports, as requested by the Training Director.
• Coordinate staff participation in training activities (e.g., group consult, training seminars and case conferences).
• Participate in the coordination of needs assessment, strategic planning and outcome assessment for NC State Counseling Center’s Training Program.
• Provide clinical supervision to trainees and unlicensed staff members (assume oversight and responsibility for each of the trainees’ clients).
• Work with Training Director to coordinate the training schedule for all Master’s Level interns.
• Consult with administrative officials of various training programs with regard to any trainees exhibiting difficulties in fulfilling their clinical or professional duties.
• Coordinate assessment of all trainees to assess progress and outcomes of their learning contract.
• Maintain strong metrics and assessment procedures and processes to assess the satisfaction and efficacy of the training program and make adjustments as necessary.

Minimum Education and Experience
• Master’s degree required in psychology, counseling, or clinical social work or closely-related field.
• Fully licensed in the State of North Carolina in appropriate discipline and maintained according to NC laws.
• Demonstrated administrative project experience preferably in the training and supervision of practicum students and interns in support of University counseling services within a higher education environment.
• Successful candidates will be strong generalist clinicians who are multiculturally affirming and possess competence and experience in working with diverse populations.
• Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a cohesive multidisciplinary team-oriented environment.
• Knowledge of legal and ethical issues in supervision and training.
Other Required Qualifications
• Experience in a university counseling center
• Experience and appreciation for the training and supervisory needs of graduate students in CACREP and CSWE clinical programs.
• Preference for candidates who have experience and strong interest in providing outreach.
• Experience and knowledge of electronic medical records systems (Titanium) that employ electronic record keeping, scheduling and data collection is preferred.
• Established commitment to culturally informed and responsive practices.
• Utilizing a time-limited model of care
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctorate degree
- Experience in a college counseling center.
- Experience and appreciation for the training and supervisory needs of graduate students in CACREP and CSWE clinical programs.
- Preference for candidates who have experience and strong interest in providing outreach.
