Data Center Technician
Job Description
The Data Center Technician is responsible for handling all of the day to day routine operational tasks to deploy, monitor, repair, and remove data center equipment components at the CRC’s data center. Deployment tasks will focus on the receipt of new equipment at the data center, assembly of equipment, and provisioning software as pre-configured by HPC System Administrators and Engineers (HPC SA&E). Monitoring tasks will comprise daily review of both graphical and text based status logs to identify systems in various states of alarm; upon identification the technician will resolve the alarm states as directed by HPC SA&E. Monitoring will also include regular verification of equipment descriptions made available for users and monthly utilization reports. Repair will include routine replacement of failed stock components such as RAM and interface with vendors to complete warranty covered maintenance. System removal will involve coordination with Notre Dame’s Surplus unit to properly dispose of equipment no longer placed in service.
Data Center Monitoring - Monitor systems by daily review of
graphical and text based status logs to identify systems which
have entered a various number of alarm states and resolve the
alarm as directed by HPC System Administrators and Engineers.
Equipment Repair – Routine replacement of failed stock
components such as RAM or power supplies. Coordinate with
equipment vendors for the performance of warranty backed
repairs.
Equipment Deployment – Receive equipment shipments at the
data center. Unbox and assemble equipment as directed.
Provision software onto the system as pre-configured by HPC
System Administrators and Engineers.
Equipment Removal – Coordinate with the Notre Dame Surplus
unit to properly dispose of system no longer designated for use.

Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required.
1 to 2 years of related experience working with computer hardware and a proven record of reliable performance with another employer.
The Data Center Technician needs to be capable of lifting and moving computer servers. Servers have a range of weights and configurations, the Technician should be able to lift up to a 50 lb. server by him/herself and heavier systems when aided by additional staff.
This is a junior level position well suited for an energetic person looking to learn about data center operations and infrastructure.
In addition to daily operational tasks, there will be many opportunities to learn a wide variety of technical skills and topics associated with computer technology.
Preferred Qualifications
An advanced degree is not required but preference will be given to those with an Associate’s or Bachelor’s in a technical field
(especially computing).
