BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
This position is responsible for the system-wide leadership, direction and oversight of the advanced clinical practice for the Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), including Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and Midwives, with highly matrixed reporting relationships throughout the system.
The Chief of Advanced Practice Nursing will serve as the organization’s subject matter expert on the practice of APRNs at Michigan Medicine. In partnership with operational and clinical leadership, will lead and support APRNs and APRN leaders in their professional development, ensuring all regulatory, accreditation and clinical standards are met; and identifying, measuring and evaluating clinical and department outcomes.
The Chief of Advanced Practice Nursing will partner with the Chief PA to provide leadership at the highest organizational level and will help coordinate and facilitate practice standards for all Advanced Practice Professionals (APPs) across the system.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential:
The Chief of Advanced Practice Nursing provides oversight for clinical practice and direction:
• Provides system wide oversight and direction for Advanced Practice Nursing
• Aligns overall advanced practice with strategic plan and goals
• Provides system wide subject matter expertise related to utilization of APRNs
• Provides system wide subject matter expertise for licensing, credentialing, regulatory activities and payer contracts/compliance related to APRNs
• Ensures organization compliance with all regulations and policies, bylaws, laws, and practices at local, state, and national levels.
• In partnership with Chief PA, provide oversight of APP workforce planning and partner with other programs and departments to increase availability of APPs to meet strategic goals.
• Coach, develop and mentor new and existing APRN leadership.
• Advises on budgetary considerations regarding APRN utilization and deployment
• Chairs and/or leads institutional committees related to Advanced Practice Nursing practice
• Develops leadership pathways for APRNs including succession planning
• Oversees the creation and maintenance of standardized institutional orientation for APRNs
• Advise with the development of a focused professional practice evaluation plan (FPPE)
• Oversight for recruitment, retention and employee engagement strategies
• Oversight for review and approval of job postings to ensure appropriate criteria
• Provides consultative support to departmental leadership teams regarding APRN practice issues.
• Maintaining effective working relationships with University of Michigan College of Nursing and other colleges to support student learners and ongoing education/professional development of workforce.
• Review and request updates to the delineation of privileges in partnership with Medical Staff Services and Medical Staff leadership

General supervision is received from the Chief Nurse Executive
SUPERVISION EXCERCISED
Functional and administrative supervision is exercised over APRN leaders and other assigned staff.
