Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Join The Driving Force of Maryland! The University of Maryland Department of Transportation Services (DOTS) is searching for a lively, highly organized Non CDL Driver to ensure the safe transport of our students, staff, faculty, and guests. Drive our smaller NITE Ride and Paratransit vehicles—no commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required!
The Non-CDL Driver provides transportation services via Shuttle-UM’s NITE Ride and Paratransit programs. NITE Ride is Shuttle-UM’s overnight, on-demand service that serves campus seven days a week. Paratransit is our subscription, on-demand service that provides curb-to-curb transportation for individuals with disabilities. If you love helping people and driving – come join our team!
Key Responsibilities
- Serves as a representative of UMD DOTS by providing quality customer service to the students, staff, faculty, and guests and by being respectful of the surrounding community
- Safely transporting passengers in a safe, courteous, and reliable manner throughout the service area
- Follows all safety regulations in accordance with the Department of Motor Vehicles’ driving regulation as well as University’s and DOTS’ specific guidelines
- Completes pre-trip and post-trip inspections
- Assisting in the boarding of passengers using wheelchairs or other mobility aids and properly secure wheelchairs and scooters
- Performs daily and routine safety checks of equipment prior to and during use and assures safe operation, reporting any defects or maintenance issues
- Maintains a clean and neat vehicle
- Attends meetings, programs and in-service training as assigned
- Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
EXPERIENCE: One year as a driver.
OTHER: Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate class and endorsement codes. If required to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License, employees will be subjected to drug and alcohol education and testing as required under Federal Highway Administration and the State of Maryland regulations.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Working knowledge of the care and operation of automotive transportation vehicles. Skill in driving in all kinds of weather and road conditions. Ability to read and write; to understand and follow oral and written instructions; to assist passengers and lift heavy objects.
OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
