Description

 

The instructor’s primary responsibility is to maintain excellence in teaching mathematics that assist students in meeting their educational goals and career aspirations. This is a full-time 9-month position is under the supervision of the Department Chair of Mathematics and the Dean of Arts and Sciences. The instructor will teach traditional and online classes, complete various classroom administrative duties, prepare lesson plans, prepare class documents for students, and satisfy the goals and objectives of VGCC including professional development, committee service, and advising.

This position has the potential to have up to two days a week for teleworking after your first nine months according to VGCC teleworking policy.

 

Essential Duties

 

Essential Job Duties:

  • Maintain a classroom environment conducive to student learning.
  • Participate in department student learning outcome assessment and assist with the development and implementation of improvement plans.
  • Communicate with students and administration through the framework provided by VGCC including posting syllabi for all classes and regularly checking and responding to e-mail and voicemail.
  • Post on the office door and maintain 5 office hours per week (generally 1 per day) at times that are convenient for student contact and do not interfere with meetings.
  • Be present on campus the number of hours required by the college President.
  • Attend commencement exercises, committee meetings, and faculty meetings as scheduled.
  • Use an active learning teaching approach.
  • Accept teaching assignments based on the needs of the college.
  • Be an active participant in the college’s retention goals.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as assigned by the Math Department Chair or Dean of Arts and Sciences.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Master's degree in mathematics, or a Master’s degree and 18 graduate credit hours in mathematics. Degrees and coursework must be from a regionally-accredited institution.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with faculty, staff, students, and others.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching mathematics classes in a community college setting, secondary setting, or post-secondary setting
  • Experience teaching mathematics classes face-to-face and online
  • Experience using Moodle and My Math Lab or similar software when teaching

 

Physical Demands

 

  • Ability to lift 30 pounds
  • Laboratory set-up and take-down for in person labs
